Lucy Kendall returns from a tour of the Continent, her luggage filled with the latest fashions and a mind fired by inspiration. After tasting Europe's best confections, she's sure she'll come up with a recipe that will save her father's struggling candy business and reverse their fortunes. But she soon discovers that their biggest competitor, the cheat who swindled her father out of his prize recipe, has now hired a promotions manager--a cocky, handsome out-of-towner who gets under Lucy’s skin.
Charlie Clarke's new role at Standard Manufacturing is the chance of a lifetime. He can put some rough times behind him and reconnect with the father he's never known. The one thing he never counted on, however, was tenacious Lucy Kendall. She's making his work life miserable...and making herself impossible for him to forget.
At first I thought this was going to be a pretty interesting and romantic tale as Siri Mitchell's books usually are but as the story progressed I found myself becoming more and more detached from the characters and story. Both hero and heroine were ruthless! I know that the candy business and really any business in general in the early 1900s required some bit of cunning but Charlie and Lucy were cutthroat! I really didn't see how their relationship ended up the way it did and so quickly with everything that went on between them that had to do with the business side of things. I loved the whole process of making candy but the characters became more and more unlikeable as the chapters went along. I love Siri Mitchell's style of writing but this book just wasn't my cup of tea. I'd suggest reading She Walks in Beauty or A Heart Most Worthy if you're looking for an excellent story set around this same time period. I'm still a big fan of this author and won't hesitate to read her books in the future.
