Princess Ever After
by Rachel Hauck
Copyright 2014
Zondervan Publishers
ISBN: 9780310315506
The Story:
Regina Beswick was born to be a princess. But she's content to be a small-town girl, running a classic auto restoration shop, unaware a secret destiny awaits her. One that will leap from the pages of her grandmother's hand-painted book of fairytales. Tanner Burkhardt is the stoic Minister of Culture for the Grand Duchy of Hessenberg. When he is tasked to retrieve the long-lost princess, he must overcome his fear of failure in order to secure his nation's future---and his own. Yet lurking in the political shadows is a fierce opponent with sinister plans to abolish the throne forever. Overwhelmed with opposition, Regina must decide if she's destined to restore old cars or an ancient nation. Together---with a little divine intervention---Regina and Tanner discover the truth of her heritage and the healing power of true love.

My Thoughts:
Almost all of my girlfriends had dreams of living a fairy-tale growing up. While we now know that odds are we won't marry a prince or move to a castle, we can still dream a little and live the fantasy through the books we read. Reading this book was a little bit like reading a grown up, Christian version of Disney's Cinderella that we read as kids.

My First TeeFury Experience!

Friday, February 21, 2014

I'm a bit of a geek. When it comes to Doctor Who and Sherlock I fangirl a little a lot. I'm always looking for fun and creative ways to outwardly show my love for my favorite shows and books. I've found that t-shirts are some of the most fun and inexpensive ways to let my inner fangirl shine.
Squee! It matches my Sherlock book purse to a T! Pun intended! ;-)
Through Facebook friends, I discovered the joys of the exclusive fan artist created t-shirt from TeeFury. I'm always a little reluctant to purchase clothing online because even with tees, it's difficult to judge what sizes and colors will work best for me, but I decided to take the plunge and peel off the 12 bucks + shipping for this "I Believe in Sherlock Holmes" shirt. It's impossible to get Sherlock merchandise in stores, so online is pretty much the only way to go even if you're picky about sizing. After waiting 12 days to print and ship, my shirt finally arrived today and I knew before I tried it on it was going to be a favorite. I am shirtlocked! ;-) 100 percent cotton, it's lightweight and comfortable to wear anytime and the screen print design looks bright and seems like it will hold up to beatings from the washing machine. Be sure to follow care instructions on the tag. I recommend ordering a size or two up like I did if you want your shirt to fit after washing.

Healer of Carthage
(The Carthage Chronicles, Book 1)
by Lynne Gentry
Copyright 2014
Howard Books
ISBN: 9781476746333
The Story:
A twenty-first-century doctor. A third-century plague. A love out of time.

First-year resident Dr. Lisbeth Hastings is too busy to take her father’s bizarre summons seriously. But when a tragic mistake puts her career in jeopardy, answering her father’s call seems her only hope of redeeming the devastating failure that her life has become.

While exploring the haunting cave at her father’s archaeological dig, Lisbeth falls through a hidden hole, awakening to find herself the object of a slave auction and the ruins of Roman Carthage inexplicably restored to a thriving metropolis. Is it possible that she’s traveled back in time, and, if so, how can she find her way back home?

Cyprian Thascius believes God called him to rescue the mysterious woman from the slave trader’s cell. What he doesn’t understand is why saving the church of his newfound faith requires him to love a woman whose peculiar ways could get him killed. But who is he to question God?

As their different worlds collide, it sparks an intense attraction that unites Lisbeth and Cyprian in a battle against a deadly epidemic. Even as they confront persecution, uncover buried secrets, and ignite the beginnings of a medical revolution, Roman wrath threatens to separate them forever. Can they find their way to each other through all these obstacles? Or are the eighteen hundred years between them too far of a leap?

My Thoughts:
I'm a sucker for time travel ever since I discovered Doctor Who on TV and read the best-selling novel Outlander. If you prefer your adventure with a Christian message, then Healer of Carthage is certainly a story you don't want to miss. Some of the aspects of the story didn't add up for me (how did she go from an elementary understanding of Latin to speaking it fluently in a few paragraphs?), but the overall story was interesting enough to keep me reading.

COTT: Return of the Cowboy Doctor by Lacy Williams

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

It's February, the month of romance! So here's a book to make your heart go pitter-patter.

Lacy Williams's Return of the Cowboy Doctor was one of our January runner-ups. Today I am thrilled to give you a closer look!

About the Book
Two years shy of his medical degree, cowboy Maxwell White is out of money. So, he's back in Bear Creek, Wyoming, working part-time for the local physician. Though he is immediately drawn to the doctor's lovely, whip-smart daughter, she seems to be irritated by Maxwell's very existence.

Hattie Powell can't quash her feelings for the town's new would-be doctor. But that's exactly why she must keep him at a distance. Hattie is closer than ever to fulfilling her lifelong wish of becoming a doctor. Now, the only thing standing in her way is the man of her dreams.

The Wyoming Legacy series: United by family, destined for love

Litfuse Blog Tour: Hopeful by Shelley Shepard Gray

Hopeful (Return to Sugarcreek, Bk. 1)
by Shelley Shepard Gray
Copyright 2014
Avon Inspire:
ISBN: 9780062204462
The Story:
In the Amish town of Sugarcreek, love comes in many forms. But will it come at all for Miriam?

Miriam Zehr has worked at the Sugarcreek Inn longer than she cares to admit. The restaurant is a favorite of town residents as well as the many tourists who come to taste the famous Amish fare. Though she always tries to have a smile for every customer, deep down Miriam knows something's missing: a family of her own.

Miriam has never felt particularly beautiful, especially because she's always been a bit heavier than other girls her age. When Junior, the man she's pined for all her life, suddenly seeks her out, she's thrilled to be noticed . . . until she realizes he's only asking her to help get the attention of Mary Kathryn Hershberger, her pretty friend.

If Miriam helps Junior court Mary Kathryn, she'll get to spend a lot of time with him, but she might lose him in the process. Are these few stolen moments worth a lifetime of sacrifice? Is Miriam right to even hope for the life she dreams of?

My Thoughts:
As much as I enjoy almost all Amish fiction these days, I've found that some authors just know how to bring the Plain people to life more than others. Shelley Shepard Gray is one of those authors. Her previous series, Seasons of Sugarcreek, is still one of my all-time favorite series'. I was excited to find that with this new series, the community of Sugarcreek and some of the characters featured in Seasons of Sugarcreek stories were being brought back along with some great new characters. While I loved seeing old friends and I really enjoyed getting to know Miriam Zehr, this book fell a bit flat for me.

A Review + Giveaway: The Traitor's Wife by Allison Pataki

The Traitor's Wife
by Allison Pataki
Copyright 2014
Howard Books
ISBN: 9781476738604
The Story:
A riveting historical novel about Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America’s most infamous act of treason . . .

Everyone knows Benedict Arnold—the Revolutionary War general who betrayed America and fled to the British—as history’s most notorious turncoat. Many know Arnold’s co-conspirator, Major John AndrĂ©, who was apprehended with Arnold’s documents in his boots and hanged at the orders of General George Washington. But few know of the integral third character in the plot: a charming young woman who not only contributed to the betrayal but orchestrated it.

Socialite Peggy Shippen is half Benedict Arnold’s age when she seduces the war hero during his stint as military commander of Philadelphia. Blinded by his young bride’s beauty and wit, Arnold does not realize that she harbors a secret: loyalty to the British. Nor does he know that she hides a past romance with the handsome British spy John AndrĂ©. Peggy watches as her husband, crippled from battle wounds and in debt from years of service to the colonies, grows ever more disillusioned with his hero, Washington, and the American cause. Together with her former love and her disaffected husband, Peggy hatches the plot to deliver West Point to the British and, in exchange, win fame and fortune for herself and Arnold.

Told from the perspective of Peggy’s maid, whose faith in the new nation inspires her to intervene in her mistress’s affairs even when it could cost her everything, The Traitor’s Wife brings these infamous figures to life, illuminating the sordid details and the love triangle that nearly destroyed the American fight for freedom.

My Thoughts:
History has always been a passion of mine. The stories I read growing up and historical sites I've visited in my hometown area alone will never let go of me. From tales of the first settlers of the area, visits from George Washington, and even ghostly stories of the local Quaker cemetery, the area in which I live has a rich and rather thrilling past. Fort Necessity, For Pitt, and other major sites that were crucial in the early days of our country are just a short drive away, so it was almost impossible to not grow up with a love of history in my heart.

My Thoughts:
From light-hearted romances, to cozy mysteries, to suspense -- I read just about everything. Lately I've been on a romance kick, so changing it up a bit with a contemporary suspense was just what the doctor ordered to help beat the winter blues and combat cabin fever. Shadows of the Past however did nothing to assuage the chill in the air (not a bad thing when reading suspense, right?). I had goosebumps on top of my chill bumps -- it gave me the shivers, that's for sure!

My Thoughts:
***Review contains mild spoilers***
Sometimes the most interesting stories are the ones that reflect the struggles that women face in their professional lives. One of my all-time favorite Christian series' Cheney Duvall, M. D. centers around a fictional 1860s doctor and the ups and downs she faces as a woman in the man's world of surgery and medicine. I was hoping that this story from Amanda Cabot, which also features a female doctor, would connect with me as Cheney's stories did. Although it didn't quite live up to my expectations, it was still an enjoyable read. However, if you're looking for a rollercoaster ride of emotion and a deep connection to the characters, With Autumn's Return doesn't really have that.
